How everything
became blue

Recognising a unique opportunity, the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group (Germany) and the VPK Packaging Group (Belgium), which had enjoyed a long relationship through the pan-European alliance Blue Box Partners, founded the independent European joint venture Blue Paper SAS. Blue Paper converted the magazine paper mill into one of the biggest plants for the production of corrugating base paper in Europe – within a very short time.
The in-depth experience of Klingele and VPK in the production of containerboard provides Blue Paper with a quite unique positioning in the European market.

The story begins in 1936, when the Swiss group Thiel built a pulp mill producing sulphite market pulp. After several changes of owner, the mill site called “Cellulose de Strasbourg” was purchased in 1988 by the Finnish group UPM (United Paper Mills) and was renamed “ Stracel”. UPM built a paper mill to produce newsprint paper. The new machine went into production in 1990. In 1999, the pulp mill was finally closed and the assets were sold and dismantled. The newsprint paper machine was converted in year 2000 for the production of light weight coated magazine paper (LWC). In 2011, UPM announced its decision to stop magazine paper production in Strasbourg and to look for investors to convert the mill. The joint-venture BLUE PAPER SAS was born.
